Sacrifices of Thanksgiving
Thankfulness is not just an emotion we feel on good days—Scripture teaches that thanksgiving is something we give to God as an offering. Gratitude becomes worship when it shapes our lifestyle, our actions, and the sacrifices we willingly place before the Lord.
1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 – Rejoice always! Pray constantly. Give thanks in everything, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
Thanksgiving is not seasonal. It is God’s will—daily, continual, intentional.
Psalm 107:1 – Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His faithful love endures forever.
Psalm 107:22 – Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and announce His works with shouts of joy.
True gratitude leads us to offer sacrifices—not burned on an altar, but lived out in our worship, praise, and generosity.
Personal Sacrifice
Thanksgiving begins with the sacrifice of yourself—your will, your habits, your priorities.
Romans 12:1–2 – Present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God… Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Gratitude is not just what we say; it is what we become.
A thankful heart produces a transformed life.
Praise Sacrifice
God is pleased when thanksgiving fills our mouths.
Hebrews 13:15 – Therefore, through Him let us continually offer up to God a sacrifice of praise, that is, the fruit of our lips that confess His name.
Praise is a sacrifice we bring again and again—not because God needs it, but because He deserves it.
A healthy Christian life is marked by lips that worship and a heart that remembers.
Possession Sacrifice
Thanksgiving also becomes worship when it affects our generosity.
Hebrews 13:16 – “Do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”
Biblical giving is an act of thanksgiving. Scripture emphasizes giving far more than many of us realize:
-
Believe – 272 times
-
Pray – 371 times
-
Love – 714 times
-
Give – 2,162 times
Why so much? Because generosity reveals the heart.
In Malachi’s day, God rebuked His people for bringing blind, blemished, and worthless sacrifices. Their giving revealed their cold hearts, not their gratitude.
But God’s purpose for giving has always been clear:
Deuteronomy 14 – “The purpose of tithing is to teach you to put God first in your life and see that He will bless you.”
Putting God first is the foundation of true thanksgiving.
Final Reflection
Thanksgiving is not a holiday—it is a lifestyle shaped by three sacrifices:
-
Personal Sacrifice – presenting ourselves to God
-
Praise Sacrifice – confessing His name continually
-
Possession Sacrifice – giving generously and joyfully
When thanksgiving becomes the posture of our lives, God is honored, others are blessed, and our hearts learn the joy of putting Him first.
