Jesus | The Messiah | Matthew 16:15-16

Jesus | The Messiah | Matthew 16:15-16

Jesus – The Messiah

At the heart of Christianity stands this question: “Who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:15). Simon Peter gave the answer that echoes through history: “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God!” (Matthew 16:16). Jesus is not simply a teacher, prophet, or miracle worker—He is the promised Savior, the Son of God, the Redeemer of the world.

The Backstory of the Messiah

Hebrews 1:5For to which of the angels did He ever say, You are My Son; today I have become Your Father, or again, I will be His Father, and He will be My Son?
Hebrews 1:8But to the Son: Your throne, God, is forever and ever, and the scepter of Your kingdom is a scepter of justice.
2 Samuel 7:14I will be a father to him, and he will be a son to Me. When he does wrong, I will discipline him with a human rod and with blows from others.
Luke 1:35The angel replied to her: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the holy One to be born will be called the Son of God.”
Romans 1:3–4Concerning His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who was a descendant of David according to the flesh and who has been declared to be the powerful Son of God by the resurrection from the dead according to the Spirit of holiness.
John 1:3All things were created through Him, and apart from Him not one thing was created that has been created.
2 Corinthians 5:10For we must all appear before the tribunal of Christ, so that each may be repaid for what he has done in the body, whether good or worthless.

The Messiah was foretold by the prophets, promised to David, and declared by the angels. He is eternal Son, Creator, Judge, and Savior.

Jesus as a Baby

Luke 1:30–31Then the angel told her: Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Now listen: You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will call His name Jesus.

Jesus’ birth was a miracle—the Son of God taking on human flesh.

Hebrews 4:14–16Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens—Jesus the Son of God—let us hold fast to the confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tested in every way as we are, yet without sin. Therefore let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us at the proper time.

Even from His earliest days, He was both divine and human—fully able to sympathize with our weaknesses.

Luke 2:29–32Now, Master, You can dismiss Your slave in peace, as You promised. For my eyes have seen Your salvation. You have prepared it in the presence of all peoples—a light for revelation to the Gentiles and glory to Your people Israel.

He came as salvation for all—Jews and Gentiles alike.

Jesus as a Child

Luke 2:40The boy grew up and became strong, filled with wisdom, and God’s grace was on Him.
Luke 2:46–47After three days, they found Him in the temple complex sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all those who heard Him were astounded at His understanding and His answers.
Luke 2:49–50“Why were you searching for Me?” He asked them. “Didn’t you know that I had to be in My Father’s house?” But they did not understand what He said to them.

Even as a boy, Jesus revealed His unique relationship with the Father and His wisdom beyond His years.

Jesus as a Man

John 2:11Jesus performed this first sign in Cana of Galilee. He displayed His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.

His miracles were not mere wonders; they revealed His glory and confirmed His identity.

Matthew 9:20–22Just then, a woman who had suffered from bleeding for 12 years approached from behind and touched the tassel on His robe, for she said to herself, “If I can just touch His robe, I’ll be made well!” But Jesus turned and saw her. “Have courage, daughter,” He said. “Your faith has made you well.” And the woman was made well from that moment.

His compassion reached those who were desperate and broken.

Luke 7:13–16When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said, “Don’t cry.” Then He came up and touched the open coffin, and the pallbearers stopped. And He said, “Young man, I tell you, get up!” The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother. Then fear came over everyone, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has risen among us,” and “God has visited His people.”

Even death itself bowed to His authority.

Final Reflection

From prophecy to birth, from boyhood to manhood, Jesus is revealed as the Messiah—the Son of the living God. He is the one who came to save, to heal, to restore, and to reign forever. To this question—“Who do you say that I am?”—the only right answer remains: “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
