If There Had Been No Easter
Introduction
Everything in the Christian faith rises or falls on one event:
The resurrection of Jesus Christ.
1 Peter 1:3
“Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. According to His great mercy, He has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.”
Because of the resurrection, we have:
- New birth
- Living hope
- Eternal life
But what if Easter never happened?
Paul answers that question in detail.
1 Corinthians 15:12–13
“Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say, ‘There is no resurrection of the dead’? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised.”
If there had been no Easter…
Preaching Is Profitless
1 Corinthians 15:14
“And if Christ has not been raised, then our proclamation is without foundation…”
Without the resurrection:
- Preaching has no power
- The gospel has no substance
- The message collapses
Every sermon would be empty words.
But because Christ is risen, preaching is not empty—it is life-giving truth.
Faith Is Foolish
1 Corinthians 15:14
“…and so is your faith.”
If Christ is not raised:
- Faith is misplaced
- Belief is meaningless
- Trust has no object
Romans 10:9
“If you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”
The resurrection is essential to salvation.
Without it, faith would be foolish.
But because He lives, faith is not foolish—it is firm and grounded in truth.
Disciples Are Deceivers
1 Corinthians 15:15
“In addition, we are found to be false witnesses about God, because we have testified about God that He raised up Christ…”
If there is no resurrection:
- The apostles lied
- The witnesses were false
- The gospel is deception
Christianity would be built on a lie.
But the resurrection proves:
- The disciples were truthful
- The testimony is reliable
- The message is trustworthy
They are not deceivers—they are dependable witnesses.
Sin Is Supreme
1 Corinthians 15:17
“And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins.”
Without the resurrection:
- Sin remains undefeated
- Forgiveness is impossible
- Guilt remains on every person
The cross without the resurrection would be incomplete.
But because Christ rose:
- Sin is conquered
- Forgiveness is secured
- Grace is available
Sin is not supreme—it is subdued.
Death Has Dominion
1 Corinthians 15:18
“Therefore, those who have fallen asleep in Christ have also perished.”
Without Easter:
- Death wins
- The grave is final
- There is no hope beyond this life
But Scripture gives us a greater promise:
1 Thessalonians 4:16–17
“The dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are still alive… will be caught up together with them… to meet the Lord in the air.”
Because of the resurrection:
- Death is not the end
- The grave is not permanent
- Eternal life is real
Death does not have dominion—it is defeated.
The Future Is Futile
1 Corinthians 15:19
“If we have put our hope in Christ for this life only, we should be pitied more than anyone.”
Without the resurrection:
- Hope is limited to this life
- Suffering has no purpose
- The future is empty
Ernest Hemingway once said:
“It’s as though we are a colony of ants living on one end of a burning log.”
That is life without resurrection—temporary and hopeless.
But then comes the turning point:
1 Corinthians 15:20
“But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.”
Everything changes with that one truth:
Christ is risen.
Because of that:
- The future is not futile—it is full of hope
- Eternity is real
- Victory is assured
The Great Reversal
Because of Easter, everything that would have been lost is restored.
- Preaching isn’t profitless—it is profitable
- Faith isn’t foolish—it is firm
- Disciples aren’t deceivers—they are dependable
- Sin isn’t supreme—it is subdued
- Death hasn’t dominion—it is defeated
- The future isn’t futile—it is fantastic
Summary
The resurrection is not a small detail—it is the foundation of everything.
Without it:
- Christianity falls apart
With it:
- Everything holds together
The empty tomb is the reason:
- We preach
- We believe
- We have hope
Final Challenge
The question is not:
Did Easter happen?
The real question is:
What does it mean for you?
Because if Christ truly rose from the dead…
Then:
- Your sin can be forgiven
- Your life can be changed
- Your future can be secure
The resurrection demands a response.
Will you believe it?
Will you live in it?
Because Easter is not just something we celebrate…
…it is everything we stand on.
