Did you know that First Baptist Los Lunas has been growing and sharing a community garden since 2014? That year, Cindi, the Pastor’s wife wanted to grow a few vegetables for her family. A small plot to the west of the parsonage was bordered and ready but had been lying fallow for many years. She asked her husband if he could till it up for her. He, in turn, asked a church member – a helpful farmer named Richard Kerr – who came and tilled a garden from the church land.

But instead of the little plot she’d had in mind, he tilled up about 3500 feet of garden rows!  He even installed irrigation and helped her to plant it. That first year produced a huge crop of squash, corn, okra, peppers, chiles, tomatoes, and carrots.

The next two years brought an expansion of 1500 feet for a total of 5000 square feet, and the help of the youth and several Sunday School classes. But with all this help came the problem of too many volunteers accidentally stepping on the rows and diverting irrigation.

Thus, Pastor James and his wife Cindi drew up a plan for 30 garden beds, a greenhouse, a chicken house, a shed, a prayer garden, and lots of fruit trees and berries for picking!

This year we have all of this but the prayer garden and 10 beds, and they might be coming in fall 2024. So far, 25 families have participated over the last few years.

Our goal is to share the soil with those in our neighborhood who are willing to plant, weed, harvest, and use or share the good things they grow!

2 Corinthians 9:6-15

Remember this: The one who plants few seeds will have a small harvest. But the one who plants a lot will have a big harvest. Each one of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give.

You should not give if it makes you unhappy or if you feel forced to give. God loves those who are happy to give. And God can give you more blessings than you need, and you will always have plenty of everything. You will have enough to give to every good work.

As the Scriptures say, “He gives generously to the poor; his goodness will continue forever.” God is the one who gives seed to those who plant, and he gives bread for food. And God will give you spiritual seed and make that seed grow. He will produce a great harvest from your goodness. God will make you rich in every way so that you can always give freely.

And your giving through us will make people give thanks to God. The service you are offering helps God’s people with their needs, but that is not all it does. It is also bringing more and more thanks to God.

This service is proof of your faith, and people will praise God because of it. They will praise God that you freely share what you have with them and with all people. They will praise him to see you following the Good News about Christ that you openly accepted. They will praise God because you freely share with them and with all people. And when they pray, they will wish they could be with you. They will feel this way because of the great grace that God gave you.

Thanks be to God for his gift that is too wonderful to describe.

We still have a few beds left for the community. Call 505.865.7957 to request a bed this year.
